Skipped Stops on a Porta Potty Route: Locked Gates, Blocked Units and What Happens Next

Every route has stops that cannot be done. A gate is locked. A delivery truck is parked in front of the units. A site crew moved the toilets behind a fence. The road is flooded. The previous article, Moving Porta Potty Dispatch Off the Whiteboard and Onto a Live Map, covered retiring the whiteboard. This one covers a problem the whiteboard handled badly: stops that do not get done, and what happens to them.

Why a Skip Is Better Than a Silent Miss

A stop that is skipped and marked is a problem the office can fix. A stop that is quietly missed is a problem nobody knows about until the customer calls. That is the whole case for the Skip button.

In the driver app, every job has Start, Skip and Complete. When a driver cannot finish a stop, Skip tells the office exactly that. The stop does not get marked done, so the service clock does not reset, and the stop does not silently vanish from the schedule.

The Common Reasons

Skips usually come from a short list:

Each reason has a different fix. A locked gate needs a code or a contact. Blocked units need a call to the site. A full tank needs a better route order. Ask drivers to add a short note and, where useful, a photo from the driver app when they skip. A photo of a locked gate or a car parked against the units ends most arguments before they start.

What the Office Does Next

Every skipped stop needs a decision the same day. Check the note, fix the cause if you can, and put the stop on a specific day and truck on the dispatch board. Often that is tomorrow, on whichever truck is nearby. For a site with a big crew, it may be later today.

Do not leave skipped stops floating. A stop that is not on any day eventually becomes an overdue pin on the Waiting List, past the 7-day grace, and by then the customer has been without service for far too long. Due, Overdue, Not Yet: Reading Pin Colors on a Porta Potty Route Map covers how overdue status works.

Talk to the Customer

A customer whose stop was skipped should hear about it from you, not discover it. A short message through two-way texting from the office works: we could not reach your units today because the gate was locked, we will be back tomorrow morning, can you leave it open or send the code? Customers are usually reasonable when they are told. They are much less reasonable when they find out from a full unit.

Can you charge for a trip when the customer blocked access? That is your policy decision. If you do, set up a trip charge as a service so the office applies it consistently, and say so in your terms.

Fix the Repeat Offenders

Some sites get skipped over and over. The same gate is always locked on Tuesdays. The same contractor always parks the dumpster in front of the units. Patterns like that need a permanent fix, not a weekly reschedule:

Do Not Punish Honest Skips

If drivers learn that a skip gets them in trouble, they will stop using it. Some will tap Complete on a stop they could not do, just to avoid the conversation. That is far worse: the service clock resets, the stop will not come due for another week, and the customer goes two weeks without service.

Make it clear that Skip is the right answer when a stop cannot be done. Talk about skips in terms of the site, not the driver. Save the hard conversations for stops that were skipped without a real reason, and those are rare when drivers trust the system.

Track Skips Over Time

Once a month, look at which stops were skipped and why. A rising number of skips on one route can point to a route order problem, such as a truck running out of tank space before the last stops, or an area that is simply overloaded. Treat skips as information about the route, not just one-off problems to clean up.
